Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR) at UBC has collected over 1,000 signatures from UBC students to ensure the following question will be a referendum as part of next week’s AMS (Student Union) elections:
“Do you support your student union (AMS) in boycotting products and divesting from companies that support Israeli war crimes, illegal occupation and the oppression of Palestinians?”
Now, SPHR, the UBC Social Justice Centre and other supporters of the referendum have learned that the AMS, due to negligence, and coinciding with a concerted campaign of misinformation, have failed to complete the necessary steps to have Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights’ referendum question on the election ballot next week. Wednesday, March 4, they are having an emergency council meeting to decide whether to delay the vote to after the elections. DELAYING THE VOTE WOULD MAKE IT MUCH HARDER TO ACHIEVE QUORUM.
SPHR and the Social Justice Centre are asking for community and university support at the emergency council meeting to ensure the referendum is on the ballot and these anti-democratic proposals are defeated. Please come out to support the Referendum:
Tonight, Wednesday, March 4
