August 23: Palestine rises at the People’s Social Forum – Ottawa

The Boycott Israeli Apartheid Campaign is participating in the People’s Social Forum, an assembly bringing together movements from across Canada and Quebec for social justice.

As part of the Social Forum, participants will convene a Palestine Convergence all day, from 9:00 am to 7:30 pm on Saturday, August 23, followed by a demonstration and vigil for Gaza. The Convergence will bring together movements for insightful speakers and discussion, and most critically, a movement assembly for discussion, strategizing and decision making for the future of the movement from coast to coast.

Session 1: Current situation in Palestine/for the Palestinian People (Refugees and Diaspora, Palestinians living in Israel, Palestinians living in West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem ((apartheid and resistance) 

Panelists:
Each panelist will speak for 15 mins to present a global view followed by a discussion

a) Current situation in Occupied Territories:
Hind Awwad, national coordinator of the Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions National Committee (BNC)

b) Situation in Israel proper:
Peter Larson of the National Council on Canada Arab Relations (NCCAR)

c) Situation of Palestinian people in the diaspora
Leila Faraj, formerly worked with Medical aid for Palestine and Oxfam. (à confirmer)

Session 2: Canadian complicity: historic perspective 

Panelists:
Each panelist will speak for 10-15 mins to present a global view followed by a discussion 

a) Dan Freeman-Maloy, author of Palestine in Canadian Politics (10min) 
b) Yves Engler, author of Canada and Israel: Building Apartheid (10 min)
c) Bruce Katz, President of Palestinian and Jewish unity (PAJU)
d) Manon Massé, elected MNA of Québec Solidaire in the Sainte-Marie–Saint-Jacques riding.

Session 3: Our struggles and actions of solidarity (BDS and other actions!!)

A round table discussion where several groups working in Palestinian solidarity can exchange their experience of solidarity and actions:

Joint statement and actions — Reaching next level of solidarity with Palestinian People

The three first sessions are designed to provide space for discussion and to highlight areas to be brought to the assembly later in the day for collective decision making in order to reinforce and take our solidarity work a step further.
